CRDF Global is pleased to announce the launch of the 2016 U.S.-Ukraine Agricultural Research Competition to support American and Ukrainian researchers focusing on agricultural science. As the world’s population is projected to reach at least nine billion people by 2050, the need for food security while maintaining environmental sustainability represents a significant challenge facing the entire global community. The aim of this competition is to facilitate international research partnerships between American and Ukrainian scientists to form long-term, sustained scientific engagement in agricultural science.
This program is accepting proposals from joint teams of U.S. and Ukrainian researchers focusing on agricultural sciences as it applies directly to the following:
* Sustainable farming practices – soil and water management to prevent environmental degradation from industrial farming or enhance crop resiliency to climate change and other environmental factors
* Genomics in plant breeding – technologies / techniques that may improve crop productivity while contributing to/increasing environmental sustainability of farmlands.
In addition to supporting high-quality research, the program will seek to promote diversity in the international science community and establish sustainable joint U.S.-Ukraine research collaborations.
Awards made through the competition will support joint research teams of scientists employed in Ukraine and USA. In addition to proposing research related to agricultural topics (listed above), eligible projects must be oriented toward non-military objectives, must be carried out in a civilian research environment (either a government research institute or accredited university) and must include participation by at least one student/postdoctoral researcher on each team.
The selection of project proposals will be done through scientific peer review based on criteria such as technical merit, research plan, research impact, personnel capacity and benefit to education and infrastructure. Selected teams will awarded up to USD 90,000 jointly for a period of 1-2 years.
